Downtown Denver is filled with new energy thanks to the rebranding of 16th Street, formerly known as the 16th Street Mall, near the Community College of Denver's (CCD) Auraria Campus. The Downtown Denver Partnership celebrated this four-year project with a weekend-long event at the end of May. CCD is located just a few blocks away and was proud to be part of the excitement.
The updated 16th Street is designed to improve safety and transportation for everyone who lives, works, or studies in the area. With better access to public transit, more pedestrian-friendly walkways, and space for local businesses to grow, the new layout is a welcome change for CCD students and the greater downtown Denver community.
The celebration brought the city to life. Over 100 performers entertained visitors, 150 vendors lined the streets, and the event even hosted the IFSC World Cup of Speed Climbing. The atmosphere was fun, fast-paced, and full of pride for what the city has accomplished.
Dr. Marielena DeSanctis, President of the Community College of Denver, currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Denver Partnership and plays an active role in shaping the city’s future. Her involvement shows CCD’s commitment to community engagement, civic leadership, and economic growth. With a key voice in the partnership’s initiatives, Dr. DeSanctis brings the perspective of higher education to the table, advocating for students and ensuring that CCD stays connected to the economic and cultural vitality of its urban campus.
As a college campus located in the city’s core, CCD understands how important it is to stay connected to Denver’s pulse. Projects like the 16th Street rebrand go beyond looks. They support economic opportunities, enhance daily life for students and residents, and create a more vibrant and inclusive downtown.
The rebrand is also an important step for pedestrian accessibility. With safer sidewalks and better connections between downtown neighborhoods, it is now easier for CCD students to get around the city. Whether they are traveling to class, going to work, or meeting friends for a bite downtown, the experience can now be much more enjoyable.
Dr. DeSanctis's role in the 16th Street rebrand shows how CCD is actively shaping the environment where its students live and learn. Through partnerships with local organizations and city leaders, CCD is making sure that Auraria Campus is not just in Denver, but is part of what makes Denver thrive.
From more convenient commutes to a livelier downtown experience, CCD is excited to see how the improvements to 16th Street will benefit both the college community and the downtown Denver community.
