The Community College of Denver funds institutional scholarships to support our CityHawk students' educational endeavors while attending our institution.

CCD Institutional Scholarships Deadline is April 16.

The Academic and Career Experience (ACE) Scholarship program contributes to the national need for well-educated scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and technicians by supporting the retention and graduation of high-achieving, low-income students with demonstrated financial need at the Community College of Denver (CCD). Students selected for the ACE Scholarship program will receive scholarship funds in the amount of up to $2,500 per semester for a total of up to $10,000 over four semesters to complete an associate degree in a STEM field.

Students in the program work with a full-time faculty mentor to support them throughout the program and make connections to internships and research opportunities that align with their program. Students also benefit from professional development opportunities and exploration of STEM-related industries. Tours of four-year institutions are also provided to guide students toward completing a four-year degree upon graduation from CCD.

James Warner "Jim" Harbert was born in a sod house in Last Chance, Colorado. With only a sixth-grade education, Jim honed his skills in the machining and welding trades through hands-on experience, guided by his father, brother, and uncles. Drafted to serve in World War II, Jim bravely fulfilled his duty and, upon returning to Colorado, lived modestly in a trailer house with his wife. During this time, he worked alongside the construction crews of H.E. Loudermilk, traveling from Colorado to New Mexico and repairing essential construction parts overnight to ensure work could continue seamlessly the next morning.

In 1955, driven by his skills and determination, Jim founded Harbert Casting Repair Service in Denver, Colorado. The business, which originally operated at 2nd and Broadway, now stands proudly at 1380 S Jason Street. It serves as a testament to Jim's dedication to his craft and his entrepreneurial spirit. The business has been passed down through generations, with Jim's son, Ken, and now his grandson, Travis, continuing the legacy.

The James Warner Harbert Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Jim's remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming a successful tradesman and business owner. It aims to support and encourage individuals pursuing careers in the machining trade, celebrating Jim’s commitment to the industry and his belief in the value of hard work, perseverance, and skilled craftsmanship.

The Winograd Award was established in 2017 to honor Leonard Winograd’s 30 years of teaching excellence at CCD and his contributions to CCD’s Ourglass publication. This yearly award recognizes excellence in creative writing by a CCD student whose work is published in Ourglass as selected by CCD faculty.

One of the most significant opportunities Leonard offered students was the chance to be involved in Ourglass, CCD’s literary magazine. Leonard championed a vision of the importance of the student's voice and personal expression on campus through his work on Ourglass. In doing so, he opened the door for many students who otherwise would not have had a forum to share their personal experiences and stories- he let students know that their voices were important.

Submit Work to Ourglass

If you are attending CCD or have attended in the past, please consider submitting your work. We accept submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, one-act plays, and any interesting combinations thereof. Winograd Award winners will be chosen by faculty and awarded a scholarship through Financial Aid. Click below to read more and submit your work for Ourglass.

Ourglass Submission Form

In 2023, with the generous ongoing support of the Winograd Family, the Leonard Winograd Literature Award was established. In addition, to his work on Ourglass, Leonard was dedicated to the scholarship and teaching of literature at CCD—particularly the study of Shakespeare. In his classes, students explored fiction, poetry and drama while learning how to engage in literary criticism and write a literary analysis. As always, Leonard valued student voice and experience, while also appreciating a well-argued interpretation.

If you have any questions, email us at LIt.Scholarship@ccd.edu

Submission Information

Literary analysis papers are eligible for the Leonard Winograd Literature Award, named in honor of longtime English Literature and Shakespeare professor, Leonard Winograd. Submissions should focus on analysis of works of literature (fiction, poetry, drama) from any time period and genre, and should not exceed 10 pages in length. The award is given annually to recognize excellence in critical analysis. Finalists are chosen by the literature faculty, and the winner is selected by a literature faculty member. To donate to the Winograd Award, go to the CCD Foundation website. Be sure to mark this as a 'Tribute Gift' to the Winograd Award.
