Programs and strategies that promote access—as well as academic and personal success for underserved students—are the foundation of CCD operations.
CCD is dedicated to expanding access, particularly for underserved first-generation and minority students. More than 60% percent of CCD students are first-generation and over 80 percent qualify for financial aid. Hispanic students make up more than a quarter of CCD’s population, providing the college with federal recognition as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. In addition, CCD’s broad array of students includes:
- high school students taking CCD classes through the concurrent enrollment and ASCENT programs who earn both high school and college credit for the CCD classes they take,
- recent high school graduates or GED recipients,
- adults who are or have been in the workforce, but have come to CCD for retraining or a career change,
- first-generation, low-income, minority students of all ages who never saw college as a possibility,
- adults with a degree who are in search of a new career, and
- international students representing over 40 countries.
The original design for the CityHawk was submitted by CCD graphic design student Roxanna De Silva. A college-wide endeavor, over 90 entries were received when students, faculty, and staff were asked to submit mascot ideas. Roxanna worked with designer Gretchen Occhionero from CCD creative services to develop the concept into a finished mascot logo. Commenting on her inspiration for her design, Roxanna said, “Every CCD student is like a hawk, free to fly, choosing their own path, and acquiring experience and maturity in the process.” And with that, the CityHawk mascot joined the community.
CCD has become is a leading point of entry to higher education for Denver and the surrounding areas. With a mission to provide "education and opportunity in a diverse world," CCD provides access and opportunity for non-traditional students, workforce development and training resources for local organizations, and community partnerships that are improving high school graduation rates.
