Colorism and Social Inequality

"I can remember being in the bathtub asking my mom to put bleach in the water so that my skin would be lighter." -Unknown

Discrimination based on skin color, also known as colorism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people are treated differently. Colorism, despite being implicit at times, disadvantages an entire demographic of people socially. This social bias is ingrained in the psyche of the majority of the global population and leads to explicit discrimination as well as internalized oppression. Colorism is another bias that contributes to social inequality. Join our panel of speakers from different cultures and hear their story of colorism within their communities and how it has shaped the way they view the world.

Students choose and develop Hot Topics, a tri-institutional event. Free lunch is provided.
