Join The Body Positive Learning Cohort today.
The Community College of Denver’s Office of Student Life, Human Services Program, in partnership with CCD Health Instructor & Body Positive RD/Nutrition Therapist, Natalie Nowak, are launching the first Body Positive Auraria Campus Cohort this fall for students interested in building a body-positive campus. The series is open to all students on the Auraria & Lowry campuses (CCA, CCD, MSU, & CUD).
Diet culture (Harrison, 2018) is a system of beliefs that:
Promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status.
Worships thinness and equates it to health and moral virtue.
Demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.
Oppresses people who don't match up with its supposed picture of “health”, which disproportionately harms women, femmes, trans folks, people in larger bodies, people of color, and people with disabilities, damaging both our mental and physical health.
As a cohort member, students will learn how to promote healthy eating, sustainable self-care behaviors, and positive body image as the norm. Cohort members become community leaders in the fight against body shaming both on and off-campus. Alumni will have the opportunity to help us shape future workshops and events around campus to combat diet culture and promote health at every size. Course credit may be available for participation.
Meetings will take place on Wednesday evenings from 5 - 6:30 p.m. starting October 7th and ending on November 11th.
(students must attend 4 out of 6 workshops in order to receive a certificate of completion)
