Confucius Institute's China Summer Camp | Deadline March 6

Take advantage of a paid summer camp in China - An opportunity for college students to explore China!

This Hanban*-sponsored summer camp offers students the opportunity to visit China and experience the Chinese language and culture first hand. It aims at improving your understanding of China and enhancing your Chinese language skills through a fun and rewarding camp.

  • 14 days - May 12 - May 25, 2020
  • May 12 - Depart from the U.S
  • May 13 - Arrive in China
  • May 25 - Return to the U. S.

Cost of Trip

  • Confucius Institute headquarters will cover all the camp costs in China, including food, accommodations, domestic travel in China, and group activities!
  • Participants are only responsible for their international airfare, visa application fee, and travel insurance.

The program will accept 15-20 American college students (including a chaperone) who are actively involved in the Confucius Institute's activities and would like to expand their knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

The applicants should be:

  • currently an enrolled student of Confucius Institute (at least 3 months or 40 learning hours),
  • have not participated in any Hanban-organized program to China in the past,
  • interested in Chinese culture, history, and art,
  • willing to participate in all summer camp activities,
  • willing to participate in the post-trip reflection meeting on campus and submit a reflection essay (500 words minimum) by the reflection meeting date, more details to follow,
  • must hold a valid U.S. passport or green card with a foreign passport. Please note those who hold foreign passports may be required for face-interviews by the Chinese Consulate in Chicago for the visa application.
  • between 15 and 45 years of age.

Activities in China & at the Campsite (Jinan)

  1. Chinese Language Classes (3-4 hours in the morning)
  2. Chinese Culture Classes (3 hours in the afternoon)
    • Chinese brush painting and calligraphy
    • Traditional Chinese music instruments (Erhu, Dizi, Pipa, etc.)
    • Chinese cooking (making dumplings, etc.)
    • Traditional/popular Chinese sports (Kungfu, Qigong, Pingpong, Badminton, Chinese Style Floor Exercise, Chinese Hacky Sack, etc.)
  3. Sightseeing/Visiting Historical Sites
    • Beijing: Great Wall of China, the Palace Museum (“Forbidden City”), Summer Palace, Tian’anmen Square, etc.
    • Jinan: Local historical sites, parks, malls and streets (to learn Chinese people’s daily life)
    • Tai'an: Tai Mountain (Also called “Eastern Sacred Mountain”)
    • Qufu: Confucius's Mansion, Temple, and Ceremony (Both Tai Mountain and Qufu are on the list of World Heritage Sites)
  4. HSK (Chinese Language Level Test): Camp participants are required to take the HSK at the end of the camp to show their Chinese language learning progress with Hanban (the summer camp sponsor)
  5. Talent show: Camp participants will show off what they have learned during the camp and their talent at the camp closing ceremony. 
  6. Chinese language and culture classes, cultural experiences, and sightseeing
