High School Equivalency Exams

The HiSET High School Equivalency Test measures college and career readiness, providing test takers with a college and career-readiness score in each of the five content areas tested: language arts reading, language arts writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

Format of Test

This is a paper-based exam. Most questions are multiple-choice, but a few may contain other formats such as essays.

Language Arts Reading
  • 65 minutes
  • 40 multiple-choice questions
Language Arts Writing
  • 120 minutes
  • Part 1 – 50 questions, multiple-choice
  • Part 2- 1 essay prompts
Mathematics
  • 90 minutes
  • 50 multiple-choice questions
Science
  • 80 minutes
  • 50 multiple-choice questions
Social Studies
  • 70 minutes
  • 50 multiple-choice questions

ID Requirement

A valid government-issued photo ID is required. (Make sure your name on your ID appears exactly as it does on your profile you created in your HiSET account when you scheduled your HiSET exam.)

Test takers must register for the HiSET exam through the HiSET web site.

Cost

Individual sub-tests $27.50 (5 sub-tests)

Please be advised that beginning January 1, 2019, there was a modest increase to the TASC Test price from $54 to $61 for the full battery of tests, or $12.20 per subtest. The TASC Readiness Test will also increase from $14 to $15.  Please update all applicable documents and note that the registration system will be updated to charge the new amounts as of January 1, 2019.

 The CCD Testing Center does not accept payments for these exams.

Results

Scores are available through your HiSET account. *They are not sent via mail.*

  • 3-5 business days for multiple-choice sections
  • 6-10 business days for the essay section

Format of Test

This is a computer-based exam. Most questions are multiple-choice, but a few may contain other formats such as essays. you will have to set an appointment with HISET at 925.446.3195 or 855.694.4738

Time Limit

  • Reading: 75 minutes
  • Writing: 105 minutes
  • Mathematics: Part 1 = 50 minutes - Part 2 = 55 minutes
  • Social Studies: 75 minutes
  • Science: 85 minutes

Cost

  • Individual subtests - $28.30 (every 5 subtests)
  • All subtests - $141.50

Results

Unofficial scores will be posted to your TASC test account two to three business days after taking the computer-based tests and about 14 days after paper-based testing.

Colorado Retest Policies

There is no waiting period between same-subject retests for the first three attempts; however, a six month waiting period is required after three failed attempts.
