Credit for Prior Learning - CLEP and DSST Exams

COVID-19 Update:

CLEP Test takers whose registration tickets expired on or after March 1 due to the impact of COVID-19 are eligible to receive a CLEP exam voucher that would allow them to take an exam any time between now and June 30th, 2021. About the Exams:

Earn college credit for what you already know! The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) exams help students earn college credit for prior learning. Learn more about each test by clicking on the tabs below. 

CCD students are required to schedule a testing appointment a minimum of 24 hours in advance.
No exceptions will be made. If you do not have a testing appointment, you will not be able to take your exam.

College-Level Examination Program

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) helps students earn college credit for prior learning. It is your responsibility to know which tests your college accepts for credit. Contact your college advisor for more information.

Please visit the College Board to learn more about specific test information, practice tests, study materials, and information on 50% off on your next CLEP exam through August 31, 2019. 

Format of Test

This is a computer-based exam. Most questions are multiple-choice, but a few may contain other formats such as essays. Please know that there are two sections that required an essay portion. In order to have the essay ordered to the Testing Center, you need to notify the test administrator so they can order the essay form. This form needs to be ordered at least two weeks prior to the testing day. This form will cost $10 dollars and students will be responsible to pay for the form. The sections are:

  1. American Literature: An optional essay section can be taken in addition to the multiple-choice test. The essay section requires that two essays be written during a total time of 90 minutes.
  2. Analyze and Interpreting Literature: An optional essay section can be taken in addition to the multiple-choice test. The essay section requires that two essays be written during a total time of 90 minutes.

Time Limit

All exams, except college composition, are 90-minutes long. College composition exams are 120-minutes long. 

ID Requirement

A valid government-issued photo ID. 

Accommodations

Please bring proof of accommodations to the testing center for review. If a private room is required, please contact the Testing Center for a reservation.

Registration Ticket

You must purchase the $89 CLEP registration ticket online at College Board and present the ticket to the Testing Center on the day of testing. 

Cost

There is a $35 testing center fee. 

Results

Results are available immediately after completion of the exam, except for College Composition scores. Essays are scored twice a month by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the results will be mailed to you. 

Retest Information

Candidates must wait at least six months between attempts.

Parking will be validated if you park in the 7th street parking garage during the week, Monday -Thursdays (6:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.) or Fridays (6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.).

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests - DSST

The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) help students earn college credit for prior learning. It is your responsibility to know which tests your college accepts for credit. Contact your college advisor for more information.

Format of Test

This is a computer-based exam. Most questions are multiple-choice, but a few may contain other formats such as essays. 

Time Limit

There is a 120-minute time limit. 

ID Requirement

A valid government-issued photo ID. 

Cost

There is a $40 fee payable to the Testing Center and an additional $85 fee payable to DSST on the day of testing. 

Military Personnel

If you are an active duty guard or reserve military member, your first attempt will be funded by DANTES when a military ID is presented to the Testing Center. 

Results

Results are available immediately after completion of the exam. Writing sample assessment results (if required) will be sent to your designated institution after you have completed the exam. Contact your institution with regards to the essay score report. 

Official Score Reports

Results will be sent to your designated institution, if selected at the time of testing, within seven to ten business days. If you do not designate an institution, a score report will not be mailed. Visit DSST for more information on how to retrieve your transcript. 

Retest Information
