Three Tips to Improve Your Odds of Success

1. Apply for local scholarships.

Many local scholarships are available through clubs, organizations, small businesses and benefactors. Your odds of winning this group of scholarships can be greater than those that are open to larger groups of students. To find these scholarships:

  • Search local media websites such as TV and radio stations.
  • Check with your instructors and counselors.
  • Use geographical internet searches such as “scholarships in Colorado”.
  • Ask people that you know have graduated from high school and/or college.

2. More Work = Fewer Applicants = Better Chances!!

Many students want to take the easy way out and avoid scholarships that require a lot of work. As a result the applicant pool is smaller, which means your chances are greater.

3. A Strong Essay is Key.

  • Don’t repeat the essay questions - Be original. Use the beginning of your essay to set the stage for your story and to showcase your personality. From there you can directly answer the essay questions.
  • Don’t use quotes - This essay is about you. You want to be unique and stand out, so be original and use your own words.
  • Don’t introduce yourself - it's cliché and could even get you disqualified.  Many committees do conduct blind readings, and essays that included personal identifiers could be discarded.
  • Stick to the word limit - It could disqualify you!
