Culturally Responsive Teaching

By Lee Waldman

One of the foundational pillars of our HSI STEM Sirviendo Grant centers on the concept of Culturally Responsive Teaching. We are an institution that serves students of many races, from a variety of nations. It is, therefore, our responsibility as educators, to create the best possible environment for those students to succeed. I’ve always been a proponent of the philosophy that “good teaching is good teaching”, no matter the students’ race or cultural background. But, there’s much more to it than that. “Culturally Responsive Teaching is a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning” (Ladson-Billings, 1994).

On the Brown University website, “Teaching Diverse Learners”, there is a list of the characteristics of culturally responsive teaching. We encourage you to follow the links on this page. They are:

  1. Positive perspectives on parents and families
  2. Communication of high expectations
  3. Learning within the context of culture
  4. Student-centered instruction
  5. Culturally mediated instruction
  6. Reshaping the curriculum
  7. Teacher as facilitator

Over the summer, Alicia Turner and Jason Burke facilitated professional development for MAT 093 and MAT 121. The team specifically focused on creating Tactivities for the MAT 093 class. These activities are hands on, active and will reinforce the skills of MAT 121. They wanted to create these for faculty to pick up and use in their MAT 093 class. The Tactivities will be stored at the Confluence Buildling, third floor and faculty are encouraged to check them out as you like.
