CCD Course Placement Tests

About the Exams

The Testing Center provides course placement testing services to CCD students for:

  • Math & English Course Placement
  • Biology Course Placement
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Course Placement
  • Foreign Language Course Placement

CCD students are required to schedule a testing appointment a minimum of 24 hours in advance. No exceptions will be made. If you do not have a testing appointment, you will not be able to take your exam.

*Students requiring Accessibility Center approved testing accommodations must schedule their appointments at the Accessibility Center (Confluence Building, Room 121).

 

Basic: Math & English Placement Test (CCPT)

In accordance with Colorado House Bill 1464, if you are entering college for the first time and declare a degree or certificate program, you are required to take the Basic Course Placement Test. This test will help determine which college courses you will take based on your skill levels in math, reading, and English. The more you prepare for this college placement test in advance, you will spend less time and money completing your educational goals in the long run. 

FORMAT OF TEST: The Math and English Placement Test (CCPT) consists of two sections: Math and English. The test is multiple-choice, adaptive, computer-based, untimed, and requires a writing sample.

    • 1 Essay Question 
  • Math Section
    • 30 Beginning Algebra Adaptive Assessment Questions (BAAD)
    • 34 Linear Arithmetic Diagnostic Questions (LADI)
    • 35 Pre-Algebra Diagnostic Questions (PADI)
    • 35 Intermediate Algebra Diagnostic Questions (IADI)
    • 19 Trigonometry & Calculus Diagnostic Questions (TCDI) 

TIME LIMIT: There is no time limit, but the average amount of time necessary to complete the test is about 2 hours per section. 

ID REQUIREMENT: A valid government issued photo ID. 

COST: There is a $10 fee. 

RESULTS: Results are available immediately after completion of the exam. 

RETEST INFORMATION: The exam cannot be taken more than once in a calendar year.  

Biology Challenge Test

Are you looking to skip ahead in your Biology courses? If you do not have the indicated prerequisites to enroll into BIO 201, BIO 202, or BIO 204, you need to take the Biology Challenge Test. These are not credit bearing tests. 

The Testing Center offers three different Biology Challenge Tests. You can download the outlines of these tests here.

  • Biology 201/204: Human Anatomy and Physiology I or Microbiology
    Designed for those who do not have BIO 111 (a prerequisite for BIO 201 or BIO 204) but want to take BIO 201 or BIO 204 classes.
  • Biology 204: Microbiology
    Designed for those who do not have BIO 202 (a prerequisite for BIO 204) but want to take the BIO 204 class.
  • Biology 202: Human Anatomy and Physiology II
    Designed for those who do not have BIO 201 (a prerequisite for BIO 202) but want to take the BIO 202 class.

FORMAT OF TEST: Paper and pencil. Each test contains 50 multiple choice questions. 

TIME LIMIT: There is a 90-minute time limit. 

ID REQUIREMENT: A valid government issued photo ID. 

COST: There is a $30 test fee per attempt. 

RESULTS: The exams are graded immediately after completion. The passing score for all tests is 35/50 (70%). 

RETEST INFORMATION: Students scoring between 32 and 34 may retake the exam at their next earliest convenience. Students scoring below 32 must wait one term to retake this exam.

English As A Second Language Placement Test

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test has three sections: Reading Skills, Listening Comprehension, and Grammar.

FORMAT OF TEST: The test is adaptive, computer-based, multiple-choice, and untimed. Some students may be required to complete an untimed writing sample to better assess your English writing skills.  

  • 20 Reading Skills Questions 
  • 20 Listening Comprehension Questions 
  • 75 Grammar Questions 

TIME LIMIT: There is no time limit, but the average amount of time necessary to complete the test is about 30-45 minutes per section. 

ID REQUIREMENT: A valid government issued photo ID. 

COST: There is a $10 fee per attempt. 

RESULTS: Results are available immediately after completion of the exam. Writing sample assessment results (if required) will be available in seven to ten business days.

RETEST INFORMATION: The exam can be taken up to three times in two years. Students must wait at least 24 hours between attempts.  

*The test is not available for international students.

Foreign Language Placement Test

If you already know some of the basics in Spanish, French, German, and Chinese, take this assessment to help determine your skill level. This test places you into a foreign language course level; it does not give credit for foreign language classes. 

FORMAT OF TEST: This test is computer-based and contains multiple choice questions. 

TIME: There is no time limit, but the average amount of time necessary to complete the test is about 30 minutes.   

ID REQUIREMENT: A valid government issued photo ID. 

COST: Foreign Language Placement Tests are free the first time for CCD students and $10 for retakes. If you are not a CCD student, the test fee is $10 for all attempts. 

RESULTS: Results are available immediately after completion of the exam. 

RETEST INFORMATION: The exam can be taken up to three times in two years. Students must wait at least 24 hours between attempts.
