Stephen S. Fredericks founded the Kingdom Enlightenment Scholarship Foundation (KESF) through his last will and testament. Steve died of malignant melanoma on April 13, 1991, at the young age of 34. Steve grew up in Southeast Denver, graduated from John F. Kennedy High School, and attended college in Arizona. He later worked as a golf pro in Texas, and it was about this time when Steve was diagnosed with cancer.

For years he had anguished over the injustice in the world and the disparity between the rich and poor. With the short time he had left, he wanted to do something about it. He volunteered at the Denver Street School and began to counsel troubled youths at the Gilliam Youth Service Center. He discovered that most of them were minorities and came from low-income families.

Before he passed, Steve created this scholarship program to help educate the less fortunate young people in our society and hopefully break the poverty cycle. Since 1992, KESF has provided over half a million dollars to support recent graduates of Colorado high schools with demonstrated financial need to attend CCD.

The Freda T. Roof Memorial and Yngve Hanson Distribution Fund benefit “worthy and needy” students obtaining a college or university education in Colorado. Ms. Roof desired to assist these students in defraying tuition, fees, living and transportation costs, and other expenses necessary to the education of individuals selected by the colleges and universities. She expressed sincere hope that the individuals selected as recipients of assistance will be of such character that they will feel a strong moral obligation to repay the amount received so that the benefits may be continued over a substantial time.

The Winograd Award was established in 2017 to honor Leonard Winograd’s 30 years of teaching excellence at CCD and his contributions to CCD’s Ourglass publication. This yearly award recognizes excellence in creative writing by a CCD student whose work is published in Ourglass as selected by CCD faculty.

One of the most significant opportunities Leonard offered students was the chance to be involved in Ourglass, CCD’s literary magazine. Leonard championed a vision of the importance of the student's voice and personal expression on campus through his work on Ourglass. In doing so, he opened the door for many students who otherwise would not have had a forum to share their personal experiences and stories- he let students know that their voices were important.

Submit Work to Ourglass

If you are attending CCD or have attended in the past, please consider submitting your work. We accept submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, one-act plays, and any interesting combinations thereof. Winograd Award winners will be chosen by faculty and awarded a scholarship through Financial Aid. Click below to read more and submit your work for Ourglass.

In 2023, with the generous ongoing support of the Winograd Family, the Leonard Winograd Literature Award was established. In addition, to his work on Ourglass, Leonard was dedicated to the scholarship and teaching of literature at CCD—particularly the study of Shakespeare. In his classes, students explored fiction, poetry and drama while learning how to engage in literary criticism and write a literary analysis. As always, Leonard valued student voice and experience, while also appreciating a well-argued interpretation.
