What You Need to Know
CCD embraces concurrent enrollment to increase academic opportunities for students and to ensure that students are better prepared for college when they graduate from high school. This process helps to close the gaps in the academic pipeline that exist, particularly for first-generation college students.
CCD works with high schools and districts after establishing a cooperative agreement with them. Through concurrent enrollment, students earn college-transcripted credits by taking CCD courses. When these courses are taught at a high school, they must follow the same academic expectations of college rigor as those classes taught at CCD campus locations. Students must abide by and instructors must comply with the academic standards of the College.

The Concurrent Enrollment Programs Act was signed into law in June 2010 and with the Colorado Community College System Statement of Standards for Concurrent Enrollment, you can find guidance to both concurrent enrollment and the ASCENT programs. The collective intent of this program is to broaden access to and improve the quality of concurrent enrollment programs. It also aims to improve coordination between institutions of secondary education and institutions of higher education.
Important College Standards that High Schools Follow
Concurrent enrollment courses must use the same books and software (if required for the course) that are used on the CCD Auraria Campus and the classroom environment must meet CCD’s standards, which may include instructor or student computers, projector and/or document cameras. Important College Standards That CCD Students Follow
Concurrent enrollment students follow the same academic standards as all CCD students. This includes standards for academic integrity academic progress, grading, attendance and student code of conduct. Similarly, concurrent enrollment students are able to benefit from the student support services available to all CCD students. Concurrent Enrollment students also follow FERPA guidelines.

CCD Adjunct Instructor Information for High School Teachers
A large number of concurrent enrollment courses are taught at area high schools utilizing high school teachers who become qualified as CCD adjunct instructors. Concurrent enrollment courses on the high school campus use the same syllabus, book, academic outcomes, instructional practices and grading policies as classes at CCD campus locations. You are strongly encouraged to incorporate the D2L online learning management tools in your class as well.
High school teachers who wish to become CCD adjunct instructors must meet the same hiring qualifications as all CCD adjunct instructors. In general, this requires a master’s degree in the content area (e.g., master’s degree in English or math, but not a master’s degree in education or curriculum and instruction with a focus in English or math) or a related master’s degree plus 18 graduate hours in the content area. There are some exceptions including many, but not all, Career and Technical Education (CTE) disciplines where a master’s degree in the content area is not required. All CTE courses do require that the instructor obtain a postsecondary CTE credential.
Job Requirements & How to Apply
When you apply to CCD for concurrent enrollment, you should treat this the same way as you would when you apply for any new teaching position. The decision to hire or not is based on the same standard used for any new instructor applying to teach at the College. Because of the steps involved in the hiring and onboarding process, your complete application with your resume and all transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) needs to be received by:
- April 15th for consideration to teach in the following Fall semester.
- October 15th for consideration to teach in the following Spring semester.
For specific instructions on how to apply to become a CCD adjunct instructor to teach concurrent enrollment, please speak with your DPS college liaison (DPS schools only) or the CCD College Pathways office at 303.352.3301. Please refer to the faculty handbook, which includes an adjunct instructor job description describing the duties and responsibilities that are not discipline-specific.
- Be prepared to complete an online application to CCD and submit electronic copies of your resume, unofficial transcripts, and CTE credentials, if applicable.
- If you are approved from the initial review, you will be invited to the CCD Auraria Campus for an individual interview with a CCD discipline-specific department chair or liaison.
- If you receive final approval, you will be required to complete a background check, complete a packet of forms for hire, and submit official copies of your transcripts to CCD. If you are not approved or do not meet CCD instructor standards for hire, you will not be allowed to teach concurrent enrollment courses as a CCD adjunct instructor.
- Because you are paid by your school to teach during school hours, you will not be paid by CCD to teach concurrent enrollment courses during your regular school day.
If approved to teach concurrent enrollment classes through CCD, you will be required to go through an onboarding process with CCD, including a discipline-specific training orientation an onboarding process before teaching your first concurrent enrollment college class. This consists of both an in-person meeting with your college program chair or liaison and an online orientation through the Desire2Learn (D2L) learning management system.
- Through the in-person onboarding process, you will be provided with discipline-specific training and orientation that will cover the course curriculum, assessment criteria, pedagogy, course philosophy, and administrative responsibilities. You will learn about the role and responsibilities of being a college instructor at CCD and review college policies, including but not limited to syllabus development, college rigor, D2L, academic dishonesty, faculty handbook, and more. You will also learn the discipline-specific standards for grading, absences, and other processes and go over the schedule for professional development.
- Through the online-orientation on D2L, you will go through modules that cover an overview of concurrent enrollment, the CCD master syllabus, how to use CCD email, how to use Banner and D2L, and universal design and accessibility. This course was designed so you will have a similar first-hand experience to see how D2L can be used, including accessing information, links & videos, taking a quiz, engaging in a conversation, and more.
Additional Adjunct Requirements
- As a concurrent enrollment instructor, you will also be expected to attend discipline-specific professional development each semester that will be provided by CCD on a regular basis. Your participation is a requirement to remain in good standing as a concurrent enrollment adjunct instructor. The purpose of these is to maintain a strong connection between you and CCD and to ensure that you are being given the proper professional development in your discipline.
- Because your class is treated the same as all college classes, your students will be asked to complete an evaluation of instruction for the College. You will receive communication from the College on how to facilitate a process for students to complete these to ensure a high response rate.
- By teaching concurrent enrollment for CCD, you are considered an adjunct instructor and will be observed by a CCD program chair or liaison at least once a year. The purpose of these observations is to ensure the quality of the college course and to provide meaningful input from, and the opportunity for interaction with, the CCD department for which you teach. If CCD is not able to certify that the course being offered at the high school matches college-level academic expectations, CCD reserves the right to cancel that class for college credit or to no longer allow you to teach classes on behalf of the College. Typically, this would occur after an opportunity for improvement based on feedback provided by a CCD program chair or liaison, including expectations required to maintain your affiliation with CCD.
Substitutes & Long-Term Absences
A short-term absence is considered if a concurrent enrollment adjunct instructor (high school teacher serving as a CCD adjunct instructor) is absent for 15 percent or fewer consecutive days of the academic term. If this occurs, a substitute teacher may be chosen from the rotation the school uses.
A long-term absence is considered if a concurrent enrollment adjunct instructor (high school teacher serving as a CCD adjunct instructor) is absent for 15 percent or more consecutive days of the academic term. If this occurs, CCD must be notified as soon as possible so a plan can be developed in consultation with the College Pathways office and appropriate CCD program chair. In cases of a long-term absence, a substitute adjunct instructor who meets the minimum qualifications of the College and is approved by CCD and completes the CCD hiring process must be used. CCD program chairs may assist in locating qualified long-term substitutes for area high schools, but the ultimate responsibility of locating a qualified instructor lies with the high school. No student teachers or teaching interns should be assigned to concurrent enrollment classes. If the long-term substitute is a high school employee, no changes would be made regarding billing. If the long-term substitute is a CCD-paid adjunct instructor, the cost for that instructor would be passed to the high school through the billing process. If a qualified substitute cannot be identified to teach the college course, CCD reserves the right to cancel the course for college credit. If a course is canceled for college credit, it may still be offered for high school credit.
If a CCD-paid adjunct instructor will have an extended absence of 15 percent or more consecutive days of the academic term at a high school location, it is the responsibility of the College to provide a substitute adjunct instructor approved by the College. CCD does not provide substitute teachers for short-term absences at high school locations for classes that are staffed by CCD-paid adjunct instructors.
