Apply to the Program

Congratulations on your decision to become a nurse aide. Your skills and compassion will be put to good use in a very rewarding career.

COVID-19 Update For All Future Nurse Aide Program Students

Nurse Aide courses will be conducted as a hybrid course to reduce the amount of time required to meet in the lab. Lectures will be almost exclusively online along with supplemental exercises, quizzes, and discussions. Labs will be in class using physical distancing practices and will be on the day and times assigned. NUA 170 will be completed via simulation or online unless otherwise arranged with a local long-term care facility. The nurse aide program is taking the following steps to promote safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Increased physical distancing during skills lab and seating in the classroom.
  • Temperature and symptom screenings before each class.
  • A shift of 1 credit of coursework to online completion.
  • Increased use of PPE in the classroom including a face-mask at all times.
  • Decreased partnered skills.
  • Increased hand-hygiene.
  • Increased classroom and equipment sanitation.

Please note the Community College of Denver is currently offering classes as is permitted by State and Local authorities. Course offerings or the status of a class can change at any time due to public health order. There is also a longer than average wait time for completion of the Nurse Aide Certificate Exam due to the COVID-19 guidelines. Students who become ill during the program will not be permitted to participate in classroom activities and may not be allowed to complete the course at this time due to safety issues.

Please do not rely on Facebook or word of mouth for updates. If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Aide Department Chair, Corey Dennis.

Application Instructions

To begin the application process, please follow steps 1 through 6. Your last step is to complete our online application. Please complete the first set of steps before you begin the application.

Email any questions you may have to the nurse aide program chair, Corey Dennis, for questions and clarification prior to submitting your packet.

Step 1. Enroll in CCD

In order to register for the nurse aide program, you must be a current CCD student. If you have not done so yet, please complete the free CCD application. When completing the application, enter either, non-degree seeking, or, undeclared, as the program option (you may not self-select the NUA program as an option).

Step 2. Complete Medical History

Complete the required medical forms for the Auraria Health Center, including documentation of MMR vaccination, Hepatitis B vaccination and flu vaccination (flu shots will only be required if you take the nurse aide course in the fall and spring semesters). The nurse aide program will also require a TB test, which is not a vaccination but a screening to see if you have recently been exposed to someone with this disease. If you have not had the Hepatitis B vaccination you will need the initial dose of a 3-dose series in order to begin this program.  If you have not had this vaccination and choose to decline taking it, you must fill out the declination form which you can request from the Chair of the Nurse Aide program.

While completing our online application, you will have the ability to upload these medical records. If you have submitted your immunization record to the health center and did not keep a copy for yourself to upload to the application, you can go to the Plaza Building, Office 149, to request a copy of your records. If visiting campus in-person, adhere to all the Return-to-Campus Guidelines

Note: All CCD students must complete the MMR vaccination forms. If not, the immunizations office has the capacity to place a hold on your student account and you will not be able to register for any classes. In addition, if you are an MSU Denver or CU Denver student, inform the Auraria Health Center that you are now a CCD student and they will transfer your profile to CCD, thereby meeting this requirement.

Step 3. Background Check and Drug Screen (BGC/DS)

CCD's nurse aide program requires that a background check and drug screen is completed prior to your admittance into the program. Please read the disqualifying offenses before applying to the program.

You may order the background check and drug screen at the Colorado Community College System’s CastleBranch website. Once you have ordered and paid for your background check and drug screen, you will be asked to upload the confirmation page only into the application. You will also need to give a urine sample to be tested for the drug screen. Please note the clinics listed on the CastleBranch order sheet when you enter your order, as this will determine where you must go to give this urine sample. You do not need to wait until you have the results from either screening before you proceed with the application. You will be contacted by the nurse aide program upon approval/denial. You will then be given information regarding the next steps in the application process. Read the Disqualifying Criminal Offenses here.

You will need to upload the confirmation page of the background check/drug screen to the online application.

Step 4. Minimum Test Scores or Previous Education Requirements

To be accepted into the nurse aide program, you must determine course placement in math and English classes. This is defined as the following: obtain the scores indicated in the chart below, by either taking the placement test, taking the math assessment and English assessment, meeting the ACT/SAT score requirements or by submitting transcripts that show previous college classes to CCD’s Testing Center. Please follow the instructions from their office if you have previously taken college classes or meet the minimum scores on the SAT/ACT. The Testing Center will be able to waive your scores or college credits so that you will be able to register for classes.  You will also have the ability to upload an unofficial transcript of previously taken classes into the application.

Use this chart as a guide if you have completed the classes below, taken the placement test, or ACT/SAT.

PLACEMENT SCORE - OR 80 or higher 95 or higher
SAT SCORE 470 470

Step 5. Program of Study Change Request Form

You will need to fill out a Program of Study Change Request Form. Once you have opened the form, scroll down the page to the very bottom Adobe Acrobat attachment and fill out this fillable form and sign it digitally. The Application Assistant will sign it and you do not need to have an Advisor sign this. Save a copy of this form to your hard drive and then upload this form into the application (see step 6).

Step 6. Complete the Online Application

After you have completed the first six steps, you may begin your online application. You may not start this application and return to it later. Please allow 30 minutes to complete the full application.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please be sure your application contains all of the uploaded documents that are required. We will notify you through your CCD student email address. Check your email frequently so that you do not miss out on any information or notifications about the program.

Final Steps

After the program manager has reviewed your online application, you will be notified of your status in the nurse aide program. Those accepted into the program will also receive instructions on your next steps, including some of the following:

  • Review class schedules and select the class of your choice. NUA 101 and NUA 170 must be paired together.
  • Register and pay for your classes. To set up a payment plan, please contact Cashier's Office at 303.556.2075.
  • Attend orientation.
  • Obtain a nurse aide textbook at Auraria Bookstore.
