Students can practice basic skills that they must perform in their clinical experiences and employment. Students begin with basic nurses aide skills and progress into harder skills. Students will learn trach care, Foleys, nasogastric insertion, wound care, sterility, medication administration, taking blood pressures, pulse rates, starting IV’s and how to run fluids to a pt.
The skills lab is open from 7:30 a.m. 6 p.m. for students to come in and practice. Students can come in and ask questions about a skill to the skills lab coordinator, who can go over the skills and procedure during these practices time before the student is tested on them.
Students must pass their skills check off before they are allowed to attend their clinical experience. It is important for student’s success in a nursing program for student to use these practice times wisely and learn and practice their skills. In the clinical experience the clinical instructor can fail a student for performing skills incorrectly or for unsafe practices.
