Human Services

The CCD Human Services program is nationally accredited by
the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE).

Social and human service professionals are crucial to a community. They organize and lead group activities, help clients with counseling or crisis intervention, administer food banks or emergency programs. In halfway houses, group homes, and government-supported housing programs, they help adults who need supervision with life planning strategies and daily living skills. They review clients’ records, ensure that they take correct doses of medication, network with family members, medical personnel and other caregivers to more effectively help their clients. They provide emotional support and help clients engage in self-determination.

In 2008, about 352,000 workers held jobs in the social and human services fields in the United States with more than 4, 150 of those being in Colorado. More than half worked in the health care and social assistance industries. Almost a third worked for state and local governments, primarily in public welfare agencies and facilities for mentally disabled and developmentally challenged individuals. Between now and 2018, the number of social and human services jobs is expected to increase by about 25 percent as the country’s elderly population grows and the demand for mental health and substance abuse treatment continues to increase. A career in human services is personally rewarding, with annual salaries ranging between $18,000 and $40,000 and hourly wages between $9.00 and $21.00.

An exciting new development in the human services field is the new national certification, Human Services Board Certified Practitioner (HS-BCP). This credential is designed for individuals who provide services to a variety of population groups, and whose educational backgrounds range from technical certificates to graduate degrees. The HS-BCP certification will help those in human services roles gain professional recognition while further strengthening this growing profession by establishing standards for education, experience, and ethical behavior.
