Ready for a hands-on career? If you like to work with your hands, solve problems, be creative and work hard, then learning a trade and earning your certification could be a great career move. The key to any trade is getting the right training employers want. A certificate proving you have learned the skills for the job will give you a foot in the door and help you earn a higher salary.

Opportunities in all these job categories are abundant for those with the right certification. As the Denver-metro area expands its highway and transportation systems, the job outlook for people with skilled trades is even brighter. Trade careers offer many different opportunities to work in a variety of settings. The construction industry uses skilled trades people extensively and pays them very well.

CCD offers both an associate of applied science in trades and certificate programs in several areas including: arc welder, fabrication welder, machine tool operator, CNC machine tool operator and lathe/mill operator.

Engineering Graphics & Computer-Aided Drafting & Design
Design and build a great career. Picture an incredible skyscraper or a factory full of complex machinery. Neither would exist without a drafter.
Machines, buildings and systems exist in the mind of the engineer or architect before they become reality. The drafter takes those original ideas and draws a picture that communicates how the machinery works or how the architect’s design should be built.
Engineers, surveyors, architects and scientists provide the rough drawings, calculations and specifications the drafter uses to fill in the technical details and visual guidelines that others use to build and create.
You can focus your certificate or degree in Engineering Graphics from the Community College of Denver (CCD) on architectural or mechanical drafting.

  • Architectural Drafters draw the structural features of residential and commercial buildings– often specializing in the type of material used to build it, such as reinforced concrete, masonry, steel, or timber.
  • Mechanical Drafters prepare detailed drawings that show how to assemble a wide variety of machinery and devices.

In CCD’s Engineering Graphics program, you’ll learn how to use AutoCAD software to capture the idea and communicate it using the language of engineering graphics in both two- and three-dimensional solid modeling. You’ll gain the skills to succeed in the growing design and engineering fields.

Architectural and mechanical drafters can expect to earn between $14 and $21 per hour. Those who go on to pursue a career in engineering could earn between $19 and $40 per hour.

AAS--Architectural Drafter
With your degree or certificate in Engineering Graphics with an Architectural Drafter emphasis, you’ll be ready to work on drafting teams for local, state and federal agencies, architectural companies, and various planning and development companies drawing plans for buildings, roads and other projects. Credits you earn toward your certificate will apply toward your AAS degree.

AAS--Mechanical Drafter
Earn your degree or certificate in Engineering Graphics with a Mechanical Drafter emphasis and you’ll be ready to work on a drafting team in an industrial plant, engineering or manufacturing firm and for various government agencies. Credits you earn for your certificate will apply toward an AAS degree in Engineering Graphics with a Mechanical Drafter emphasis.
