Urban Male Initiative/CCD Benefit Car Wash, 10/6

(Denver, CO) Members of Urban Male Initiative (UMI), a program to provide social and educational support to male students at Community College of Denver (CCD), will have a benefit car wash on Saturday, October 6, 2012, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m., at the Circle K, located at 1300 W. Colfax, directly across from the Auraria campus.

Proceeds from the benefit will be shared between Aurora theater shooting victim and CCD student Ashley Moser and program development on leadership and community involvement for male students at CCD. Donations will be accepted.

After the theater shootings, the men involved with UMI saw the impact of the tragedy on the victims and the CCD community and wanted to find a way to help.  Lovie Barnard, peer mentor for UMI, developed the idea of a benefit car wash as a project that could provide support to Ashley and future program development at CCD.

Urban Male Initiative is a program for students at CCD. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by urban males, CCD developed UMI to support academic success, provide opportunities for personal and professional growth through leadership development, service learning and intentional investment in life skills. Launched in spring of 2012, this successful program currently has nearly 200 participants.

Participants from UMI, along with CCD faculty, staff and students, will be hand washing the cars.
