(Denver, CO.) Four students are the first to graduate with a certificate in journalism from Community College of Denver.  Journalism studies are a part of Career and Technical Education, a department that provides industry specific job training skills, including terms and technology, to students.

Under the direction of CCD journalism Associate Professor Kristi Strother, the students are Rozelyn Cervantes, Ursula Romaine, Kayla Ross, and Kat Majzner.  During their course of study at CCD the students also worked on the student newspaper, Campus Connection.  This practical experience has helped prepare them for a career in journalism.  Their future plans are varied, but Kayla Ross is off to Syracuse University in fall 2012 to pursue a four year degree in journalism and graphic design.

After approval by the State of Colorado in 2010, the Community College of Denver (CCD), a part of the Colorado Community College System, launched the Journalism Program; graduates of the program graduate with a Basic Journalism Certificate. The credits students earn are transferable to state institutions of higher education in Colorado.

The Journalism Program at CCD benefits students by helping them improve their writing skills; it provides internships at local media outlets, real world experiences and activities such as tours of local media outlets; and it serves as a bridge for students continuing on to four-year universities.

This 18 credit certificate is designed to prepare students for the increasingly complex field of journalism and mass media. Within the program students are introduced to convergent media and the terms and technology standard in the industry. The program offers a variety of classes to give students an expansive knowledge of different mediums and their importance to the industry.

Community College of Denver (CCD) is a leading point of entry to higher education for the City and County of Denver. CCD provides a cost effective college education, along with access and opportunity for nontraditional students, workforce development and training resources for local organizations, and community partnerships.
