(Denver, CO) The Community College of Denver (CCD) chapter of Psi Beta National Honor Society in Psychology was honored at the July 2011 American Psychological Association Conference in Washington, DC.  Receiving the National Community Service Award and Chapter Excellence Award from Psi Beta Executive Director Dr. Jerry Rudman were CCD Psi Beta President, Rayenna Baca; Membership Officer, Beverly Millican; and Vice President, Yeimy Medina; along with Faculty Advisors Diana Joy and Christy Cummings. The Chapter Excellence Award recognizes the chapter for outstanding performance in all four areas of Psi Beta’s mission: Leadership, Scholarship, Research, and Community Service.

In addition, CCD’s Psi Beta was invited to deliver a poster presentation of their research project, “Homelessness and Housing Challenges, Jeopardizing Student Success” at the conference. This was a unique opportunity for undergraduate students and a valuable accomplishment for the members of Psi Beta.  Professors and graduate students from across the nation spoke with CCD students, and many were interested in replicating the study at their college or university.

Students and faculty, along with 13,000 attendees from across the nation, also participated in four days of educational programming with over 400 symposia, panels, workshops and lectures to choose from per day.  Summarizing their experience they say, “We were honored and recognized, represented CCD proudly to a national audience, gained semesters worth of knowledge, networked like crazy, were overwhelmed, exhausted, and thrilled. We discovered that we could set our sights higher; we came away feeling engaged and connected to a larger academic and professional world.”
