CCD Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Inducts 237 New Members
(DENVER, CO) Community College of Denver (CCD) announced the induction of 237 student scholars into the Alpha Mu Mu Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for the spring 2012 class. Total CCD student membership is now 750.
In addition to honoring the new members of Phi Theta Kappa, the ceremony included a presentation by Rod Risley, PhD., Executive Director of Phi Theta Kappa since 1985. A community college graduate, he has been instrumental in increasing scholarships, providing leadership development and eliminating barriers for transfer for all community college students. He is a strong advocate for community colleges and the opportunities for educational excellence they offer to traditional and non-traditional students.
A new award, “I’m Here Because of You,” were given to CCD faculty and staff who were nominated and selected by the students as significant influencers in their lives.
Also inducted were two honorary members of Phi Theta Kappa; Bernice Harris, CCD Provost, and Nancy Story, Dean of Educational Advancement.
Phi Theta Kappa is currently represented at more than 600 colleges around the world. Its mission is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students; and, to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
"This is wonderful,” said William Ashcraft, Assistant Professor of History and advisor for the Alpha Mu Mu Chapter, “At CCD our students often juggle work, families, and school, all the while keeping their eye on the future and completing their college education. “
Eligibility requirements for membership in Phi Theta Kappa include enrollment in an associate degree program, completion of 12 hours of college level coursework toward that degree, a grade point average of 3.5, an invitation to membership from their chapter and adherence to society moral standards.
The formal CCD spring Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony was held April 26 on the Auraria Campus.
